Jen Mankins of Bird Likes Erin Wasson, Rag & Bone, and Rachel Comey

Throughout the week, the buyers from Bird, Henri Bendel, Oak, and more will tell us which runway looks they plan on stocking. In today’s installment, Bird owner Jen Mankins loves the downtown cool at Erin Wasson, the colorful leather jackets at rag & bone, and all of Rachel Comey’s collection, especially the beautiful silks and textures.

Erin Wasson for RVCA
The capsule collection from model turned muse turned stylist turned designer Erin Wasson for RVCA was the perfect dose of downtown cool to start Fashion Week off with a bang. I loved the divine slouchy jersey tanks and tees paired with simple black minis and barely-there short-shorts in every fabric, from Wasson’s signature distressed denim to sexy silver leather. The acid-washed denim vest was another favorite, as was the black floral mini-sundress. Long, lean legs — while not included—are highly recommended.

Rag & Bone
The latest collection from David Neville and Marcus Wainwright was inspired by Anton Corbijn’s film Control about the life and tragic early death of Ian Curtis, lead singer of British band Joy Division. Mining the influence of music on fashion, the duo explored street styles from rockers and mods to rude boys and skinhead punks. Great leather jackets (especially one in mustard yellow) were paired with skinny cropped denim. Belts and bangles with lots of hardware were shown with every look. I loved the matching his-and-hers salt-and-pepper wool mod suits, and model Coco Rocha rocked a razor-sharp, cobalt-blue, silk-dupioni suit. I also loved the mixed plaid on plaid shirts, ties, and pocket squares.

Rachel Comey
A hint of fifties Jazz Age permeated the new spring collection from Rachel Comey. As usual, gorgeous prints were the name of the game, layered sometimes three at once, for maximum impact. She also played with textures, mixing puckered silk, smocked cotton, floral jacquards, and honeycomb knits all set in a cool palette of gray, navy, olive, and chartreuse. It is hard to narrow down the looks I loved, as I am completely obsessed with this collection and it has quickly become one of the most coveted lines in my shop. My spring uniform will be the pink and gray tusker-print pious top worn with corsage jacquard vendor shorts or the honeycomb ivory waxing-moon-print top with electric-red and blue tam-tam-printed Fulton Market shorts. Amazing hand-crocheted belts and clogs, oxfords, and espadrilles complete the collection.
