Are the Men’s Shows in Peril?

Yohji Yamamoto has canceled his spring 2010 men’s show, scheduled for the end of this month in Paris, “due to the worldwide economic situation.” Instead, the designer — who ingeniously put old men on the runway a year ago — will show his new collection by appointment only in his Paris showroom.

We’re starting to feel a little afraid for the men’s shows this season. Armand Basi and Veronique Branquinho also won’t show in Paris (Branquinho must shutter her eleven-year-old label entirely, owing to the economy). Who knows if more designers will drop out. New designers to the calendar might not outnumber those who have dropped out, as previously reported. On the upside, Issey Miyake’s men’s collection will return to the runway after seasons of presentations, Tim Hamilton is staging his first men’s show, and Alexis Mabille will stage his first men’s show.
