Sophia Kokosalaki to Design Diesel’s High-end Black Gold Line

Denim impresario Renzo Rosso of Diesel seems to have found the perfect choice to take over the helm of his top-shelf label, Black Gold. Always clad in dark denim herself, Greek designer and ex-Vionnet–creative-director Sophia Kokosalaki, famed for her work with her own brand and for crafting costumes for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games (that’s right), should bring a certain level of personality and downtown hipness the young imprint has been searching for. Already familiar with Diesel’s parent company, Only the Brave, which bought out her signature line a couple of years back, Kokosalaki has inked a deal that sells her back her signature collection and will skip the September shows to reboot Black Gold. Said Rosso, “[Kokosalaki’s] talent is incredible. Her taste in high-end fashion is already known, but what people do not necessarily expect from her is her skill in dealing with denim and contemporary casual, the core of Diesel Black Gold.” If Kokosalaki even just offered up her own wardrobe for her first collection, we’d be down.
