Backpacks were slung across the slight shoulders of many a model in the spring menswear shows, from Burberry to DSquared2 to Louis Vuitton, and we’ve been admiring Eastpak’s upscale collaborations in stores for a while now. But somewhere between our junior-high days and the runway, the price of the totable standard shot out of our price range (it could have something to do with the ostrich leather). This silky new version by Lower East Side boutique Assembly is affordable and grown-up, hand-sewn in a soft cashmere blend and finished with antiqued hardware. And despite the familiar shape from our youth, it’s free of showy labels and embellishments. Consider it an updated — less bulky — alternative to the man bag.
