Is Martin Margiela’s Purported Retirement Just a Joke?

T magazine recently reported rumors that Haider Ackermann may take over design at Maison Martin Margiela, that fabulous creative fantasy land where everything down to the ketchup bottles in the offices is painted white, and the face of Margiela himself remains unknown to the media. So it would make sense, in an office like that, where they make coats from wigs and decide “Hey! Wouldn’t it be neat if models walk the runway backward this season?” the designer would play jokes on the industry. New rumors about the house have him doing just that: Hint magazine reports Margiela’s supposed retirement or semi-retirement may just be a hoax he’s playing on his adoring public, adding, “Whatever the case, we hear the incognito king was at the Los Angeles boutique not long ago waiting on unsuspecting costumers.” But if he’s not taking some “me” time away from fashion design, how does one explain his disappointing fall 2009 show? A man who paints his paper clips white probably doesn’t just decide to half-ass it one day. Also, we’re talking about a rumor about a rumor about a rumor. Facts are apparently out again this season.
