Balenciaga Sues Steve Madden

Balenciaga filed a lawsuit against Steve Madden for allegedly copying the label’s multicolor Lego heels from the fall 2007 collection. Filed on Tuesday in United States Eastern District of New York Court, the complaint states that Steve Madden “intentionally copied” the fall 2007 footwear, which first gained notoriety when Beyoncé wore them to the American Music Awards in November 2007 (she was namechecked in the complaint!). The original Balenciaga pair sold for $4,175, while the knockoffs, which came out in 2008, sold for $99.95, or approximately 2 percent of the original price. And it’s not like Steve Madden’s camp hasn’t been hit with infringement lawsuits before. In October, Alexander McQueen slapped the company with a lawsuit for copying its black Faithful bootie. Will Steve Madden learn its lesson this time?
