Dresses are toughening up this fall as leather looks become a runway staple. Designers didn’t just take a cue from bondage getups for their interpretations — the pieces are generally sweet and feminine. Altuzarra’s body-hugging black pieces were adorned with buckles and buttons, while Cynthia Steffe sent out schoolgirl-inspired jumpers made of the material. Frank Tell and Jeremy Laing both used color, ranging from slate to pale yellow to apple red. Alexander Wang created an all-leather shirtdress. And it’s not like we haven’t seen this tough-girl look work off the runway before: Kate Moss wore a black leather dress with long sleeves to the Miu Miu show in Paris last season. It can be done!
