Jessica Simpson Appears Unretouched With No Makeup on the Cover of May’s Marie Claire

It is so like the fashion industry to move on to something new just when you think another thing has actually caught on. Last week it was curves, this week fashion seems more fixated on its other inner demon: retouching. French Marie Claire’s entire April issue is retouch-free, and now American Marie Claire’s cover and inside spread of Jessica Simpson is retouch- and makeup-free. French Elle did makeupless no-retouch covers about a year ago, which makes Simpson’s new cover less thrilling. As does her reality-TV presence, both current (Price of Beauty) and past (Newlyweds), in which we see her with no makeup or retouching, not to mention the Twitpics and vids she doesn’t seem to gussy up for.

As with April’s French Marie Claire cover girl and models, Simpson looks great. But she wouldn’t be so famous if she didn’t. And her almost unnoticeable wrinkles and freckles are hardly any great reveal. If magazines have become emboldened enough to shoot plus-size models — and nude at that! — and models and famous actresses with no makeup or retouching, maybe they could go a step further and try not retouching women who aren’t in their twenties, and show those signs of age most magazines would like us to believe are freakish and not normal. That is, if they can find such a thing in Hollywood these days.
