mcqueen's future

Alexander McQueen Names Sarah Burton Creative Director

Sarah Burton is the new creative director of Alexander McQueen, succeeding the label’s founder, who committed suicide in February. Burton was McQueen’s right-hand woman and has been head of design for womenswear since 2000. She completed McQueen’s fall 2010 collection after the designer’s death just weeks before the show. The 1997 Central Saint Martins graduate started working for the label in 1996 and has promised to “stay true to [McQueen’s] legacy.”

Gucci Group, which pledged shortly after McQueen’s suicide to keep the label going, hasn’t revealed any details on the spring 2011 show, which is just about four months away. McQueen was known, among so many things, for his fantastical, theatrical runway shows. The fall 2010 show was a private, scaled-back affair for very select guests since the staff didn’t feel right executing the concept McQueen had devised for that show without him.
