Zac Posen Wants to Show in Paris, Where They ‘Understand’ His Clothes

Zac Posen is understandably a little fed up with New York. The Times accused him of being too big for his britches — a “showman trying to project a sense of grandness” — when he was just good at making dresses flattering to many body types. The Wall Street Journal painted him as a momma’s boy with a mom who couldn’t even say her son had “grown up” over the past year. His Z Spoke line is clogging the sales racks at Saks. Also, he can’t get the time slot he wants for New York Fashion Week. So he wants to show his next collection, spring 2011, in Paris, where, he told a visitor to his showroom this week, “they understand my clothes.”

WWD reports:

When called today for details, Posen backtracked. He said nothing had been decided, but that “doing a fashion show in New York with today’s climate, is difficult.” He added that in Europe, “my clothes are respected.” Meaning that such is not the case in New York? “It’s not just about respect,” Posen said. “It’s about the work the work I do, and who wears the clothes.”

Posen, whose company will make its first profit this year, according to his mom, just made a quick buck by turning the units at 16 West 21st Street into flashy purple people eaters. He said that, with his Z Spoke line and Target contracts, he now does sixteen collections a year. We get his frustrations, but we don’t want to lose him to France. Hopefully this is just one of those phases young New Yorkers go through where they think the only solution to their New York stress is getting out and going somewhere foreign where life is fun and fresh again! Good thing most of those people never go anywhere.
