My Pet Square: Australian Hipsterdom at Williamsburg Prices

Angelique May-Bennett and Vicki Lee are a classic odd couple: May-Bennett was a veteran model and Lee was a lawyer. The Sydney-born pair met five years ago and hit it off, bonding over sketches and fabric swatches. Drawing on May-Bennett’s fashion experience — she also styled for V Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar — the two friends decided to launch their own quirky-cool (and pointedly affordable) label, My Pet Square.

The brand exploded in Australia and is now sold at more than 80 stores throughout the country, including the Cheap Monday flagship on Bondi Road. This season, the pair is testing the waters overseas, introducing the spring collection at Pixie Market, Basic Basic, and Babel Fair. The alternately pleated, slashed, poufed, and see-through designs are meant to be self-styled, layering jersey, silk, chiffon, cotton, and lace. (Lee claims that her vision of heaven is “rolls of fabric everywhere,” viewed through a soft-focus lens.) But the line’s major draws — besides that covetable slashed dress above — are its budget-friendly price points: The entire collection hovers comfortably in the $100 to $250 range.
