Identical twin sisters Daphne and Vera Correll grew up in Freiburg, Germany, making childhood art projects out of yarn, fabric, wood, and clay. Later, the pair graduated to weaving, sewing, crocheting, and knitting — skills they refined while attending art school in Amsterdam (together), New York (Daphne), and Chicago (Vera). The pair launched their joint label, Correll Correll, in Berlin in 2006, turning out delicate lace detailing, whorled crochet, and hand-knit merino dresses.
The pair relocated to the Lower East Side two years ago, where they work from a small studio. Though the label has been picked up by a handful of downtown-cool boutiques this season, including Project No. 8, Jumelle, TG-170, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh, the Corrells maintain the same meticulous, labor-intensive approach as when they founded the brand: The silk, merino, and linen pieces are dyed, sewn, and knit by hand; T-shirts are stitched from vintage jersey for softness; and handbags are crafted from recycled leather, belts, fishnet, and ropes.
