Roland Mouret Wants to Dress the Obamas

Last night, at an intimate dinner celebrating Roland Mouret’s new menswear collection, Mr., the French designer told The Cut about the new leading couple in his life. “I would like to dress Mr. Obama, he is a very suave man,” he said. “But then, I see Michelle, she has pushed the boundaries of choice. She is womanly and, at the same time, she is so bright. I think she would fit very well in my clothes.”

British Fashion Council chairman Harold Tillman, actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and other guests joined Mouret on the ground floor of landmark London store Harrods to eat a three-course meal, surrounded by Mouret’s new menswear collection. “The concept of the menswear came around from some of my female customers saying it would be interesting to see what I could do with a man,” explained Mouret. “My notion of a man and a woman is that the woman is the jury and the man is the boss, you don’t create the same kind of clothes for men and woman but the two do complement themselves.”

It’s set to be a hectic year for the London-based designer, who plans to open a six-floor flagship store in spring 2011. Said Mouret, “I am so proud of what I have done, so proud about what I am going to do in the future.”
