Steven Alan Gets New York Style

I’m a sucker for a homegrown success, and Steven Alan is nothing if not a real New York boy who’s made good. The native Upper West Sider presented his spring collection at Chelsea Piers yesterday, and demonstrated why his name has essentially become an adjective for the types of people who bicycle to work and know how to wear clean, simple pieces to individual effect. Alan’s clothes have incredibly classic roots: We saw lots of nice cotton pullover sweaters and easy slip-on dresses for girls, in addition to well-cut army pants and — of course — shirts, shirts, shirts for the boys. They are not complicated; they are what people who are young and attractive and busy use to get around town whilst looking good. By having such clarity of vision, and by understanding the lifestyle of this city so incredibly well, Alan has succeeded in giving New York a brand that’s entirely of, and right for, this town.
