Joan Smalls Is Paris Fashion Week’s Top Model

Gisele, Stella, and Kristen all made exclusive appearances this Paris Fashion Week. Bündchen returned to her Balenciaga roots and wore the label’s final look; Tennant opened for Chanel; and McMenamy closed Louis Vuitton’s campy, chinoise-inspired collection sans shirt. Paris’s other star cameo was Beth Ditto’s opening sashay down Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway.

Yet the week was dominated by three newer faces: Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse, and Joan Smalls. Kloss had the lead in openings slots, taking the first look for Sonia Rykiel, Christian Dior, Hermès, John Galliano, and Zac Posen. Striking newcomer Arizona opened and closed for Miu Miu, on top of her opening looks at The Row, Rochas, Kenzo, and Chloé. But the week’s top model was hardworking Joan Smalls. After years in the industry as a successful commercial model, the Puerto Rican model continues to make serious headway into high fashion. From her Givenchy campaign to her fall 2010 i-D cover to her opening slot at Yves Saint Laurent, and closing slots at Dior and Gaultier, Smalls has finally arrived for good.
