Dov Charney Used to Take Pictures in His Dad’s Basement

After taking some flak for their recent public-hair-flaunting ads, American Apparel decided to take a tamer approach: The brand’s latest campaign features still-life photos that Dov Charney took at age 11 in a boiler-room-turned-darkroom in his dad’s basement. It even includes a quote from Dov’s mom, who explains, “[Dov’s] first major photo essay was a series of photographs he shot during a mid-1970s teachers strike in Quebec City … The central focus of his work has been the urban vernacular and the people in the city.” [Fashionista]
