Best Bet: M.A.C. Mineralize Eye Shadows

When it comes to eye shadow, it takes a lot to impress us. The splurgy new “it” palette of the season is usually pretty easily matched in the makeup aisle at Duane Reade. But M.A.C.’s new Semi Precious collection, out next week, offers a range of swirled, multitone shadows that are tough to replicate. The marbled effect is strikingly similar to the canceled Rodarte X M.A.C. collaboration, but this line includes more wearable, skin-tone-flattering shades than the former. Though some of the compacts look prettier in the compact than on your face — in particular, the darker navy, violet, green, and burgundy-flecked palettes turn a uniform smoky gray on your lids — there are a couple standouts in the mix. Hint of Sapphire is a dusky, lilac-tinged silver (a blend of pink violet, teal, copper, and blue), while Faux Gold is a warm, peachy gold that complements sun-kissed skin (a mash-up of coral, gold, lime, and bronze). Both pack a subtle shimmer that accents eyes without looking over the top.
