Pulitzer Prize–winning fashion critic Robin Givhan has gotten a book deal to write about the Grand Divertissement à Versailles, a competition held in 1973 that pitted five American designers against five French designers in a walk-off of sorts at Versailles. The show was a pivotal moment for the American fashion industry, but it’s also hailed as a historical point for American designers’ use of models of color, including Norma Jean Darden, Pat Cleveland, and China Machado. This book will be Givhan’s second; she’s also the author of Michelle: Her First Year as First Lady, and has contributed to three other books about fashion.
