Derek Lam: ‘I Don’t Want a Woman to Feel Like She’s Teetering’

Derek Lam’s spring 2013 collection was dominated by skirt-and-top pairings, which the designer hopes will provide women with easy, wearable day-to-night outfits. Which certainly isn’t to say the garments were bland: Many of the pieces were made of a thick, sparkly material that looked almost like fuzzy, colorful tinsel. Made from an iridescent foil that was laser-cut and then melted for added texture, Lam said he was going for an updated version of sequins. Also worth a look: his pointy-toed slingback shoes, equipped with sturdy heels for wobble-free steps. See footage from his show, plus the full interview in our video.
