Video: Fire Drills and Maharishi at Marchesa

Backstage at Marchesa’s show at Grand Central yesterday, makeup artists were busily painting specks of gold onto Hilary Rhoda and Carolyn Murphy when suddenly, a horde of MTA officials began herding everyone onto the runway. “It’s a fire safety inspection,” they explained, as wet-haired models wandered gingerly around in paper flip-flops, their toenails still drying. Once the fire marshal had treated everyone to a lecture on evacuation procedure (while Marchesa designers Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman stood by, smiling nervously), everyone was allowed to return to their posts.

But despite all the extracurricular preshow activities, the collection — inspired by the Beatles’ trip to India with the Maharishi — finally walked beneath Grand Central’s majestic chandeliers and soaring columns. See footage from the runway as well as all the additional MTA excitement in our video.
