Feminists Remember Shulamith Firestone

When second-wave feminist writer and artist Shulamith Firestone died in August, her obituaries left something to be desired. Firestone was best known for her 1970 book The Dialectic of Sex, which made her famous at 25, but after which she largely disappeared from public life. News reports elliptically mentioned that she had been reclusive, mentally ill, and isolated at the time of her death but glossed over her role in founding several feminist organizations, to say nothing of the lasting relevance of her ideas. Good thing n+1’s feminist research collective filled in the gaps last week, with a series of illuminating anecdotes and essays from Firestone’s contemporaries and admirers, including Jennifer Baumgardner, Chris Kraus, Ti-Grace Atkinson, Kate Millett, and Alix Kates Shulman.
