What do you get when you ask 29 artists to do a no-holds-barred reimagining of traditional holiday trimmings? In the case of Grey Area’s “Ornamental” exhibit and sale (December 13 to 23 at Coates Wyllie, 12 W. 29th St., nr. Broadway; 917-740-7725), the answer is everything from miniature oil paintings by graffiti artist André Saraiva to a human-hair ball from mixed-media master Vadis Turner. Snarkitecture’s all-white crumbling orb ($24), illuminated here with Christmas lights, “suggests a ghost of the original ornament,” says Alex Mustonen, the design collective’s co-founder. “It’s about making the object perform in new ways.” Plus a blown-glass lamp, an octomug, and more in this week’s issue.
