Sotomayor Rules in Favor of Contraceptives, Against Hobby Lobby

CNN reports Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor refused to block a portion of Obamacare that requires companies to cover certain contraceptives for their employees, like the morning-after pill. Hobby Lobby — an arts and crafts chain with more than 13,000 workers — and Mardel Christian bookstores, both based in Oklahoma City, sued the government because they don’t want “to provide insurance coverage for certain drugs and devices that the applicants believe can cause abortions,” Sotomayor explained in her opinion, adding they can continue their efforts in lower courts. According to the AP, “Company officials say they must decide whether to violate their faith or face a daily $1.3 million fine beginning Jan. 1 if they ignore the law.” That’s a lot of arts and crafts. And books about Jesus.
