GIF Lesson: How to Cover Up Under-Eye Bags

In a new series, makeup artist Daniel Martin helps us understand the art of makeup application through step-by-step GIF tutorials.

The concept of concealer is simple: Once you’ve found a formula and shade that works for you, you should be able to apply it on your face et voilà, no more blemishes or under-eye bags. But it’s not that easy in the real. While its pigmentation and formulation are key, the stuff can’t exercise its full potential unless it has been applied correctly. It needs to look blended and seamless enough to deceive others into believing that you actually get eight hours of sleep a night.

To teach you how, Martin used Lancôme’s Effacernes Waterproof concealer in this tutorial; feel free to use whichever product works best with your complexion.

Step 1: Apply your favorite eye cream to the under-eye area (the more hydrated the skin, the smoother the concealer application) by lightly patting it on with your ring finger. Allow the cream to dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Lightly dab your ring finger or a small, flat, and dense brush into the concealer.

Step 3: Apply concealer to the area. Tip: Start from the inner corner of the eye and follow along the natural curve of your lower eye socket as a guide.

Step 4: Use your finger to lightly pat and blend the product all over the under-eye region. Tip: Rubbing or smearing the product will only move the makeup around instead of allowing it to settle into the skin.

Step 5: To further blend in the concealer, follow with quick sweeping and tapping motions using your concealer brush.

Step 6: Tap a larger, softer brush in face powder and lightly dab it over the concealer. This will help set the makeup.
