Breaking: The Fashion Industry Is Underpaid

Fashionista satiated our inner voyeur with their salary survey, released today. They got responses from 5,000 people toiling in fashion-related jobs across retail, design, creative, and more, from companies like Condé Nast, J.Crew, Macy’s, and Hearst. In general, survey results revealed that nobody is making a ton of money, or even really enough money — unless you’re a stylist, director of some sort (in the $100,000s), or a CMO ($306,600 a year on average). Surprisingly, although jobs in social media were the hot career, employees in that sector make the lowest across-the-board — even top-manager salaries averaged out at $71,900. On the plus side, assistants now make salaries in the low- to mid-$30,000s. It’s not a fat stack of cash by any means, but at least it’s not the $19,000 starting salary I was once offered in an interview. Progress!
