Former Miss World Priyanka Chopra recently became the first Indian woman to ever land a Guess campaign, shot by Bryan Adams (yes, that Bryan Adams, and yes, these are Guess’s most gorgeous ads ever). Last night, she discussed the new campaign at the Keep a Child Alive Black Ball. Was she worried about the photos being overly provocative, particularly back in her home country? “I come from the land of Kama Sutra,” she told the Cut. “We’re conservative in our culture, but not in our pop culture.”

Now the highest-paid actress in India, Chopra has progressed far beyond her pageant days. In hindsight, what were those like? “I was 17 then. I don’t think I understood it,” she admitted. “We were chaperoned everywhere, and I couldn’t do anything because I was underage. I had to grow up immediately. I mean, do you remember yourself at 17? Can you imagine? Being in front of the world press and talking about the economy in Uganda? I had to wing it!”
