Male Gaze: Lo-Fang, Electric Violinist

February’s been a big month for Matthew Hemerlein, the 30-year-old electronic pop musician who records under the name Lo-Fang — and not just because next month he’ll be opening for Lorde on her U.S. tour, which kicks off March 3. In addition to being on a first-name basis with the teen star (he refers to her exclusively as “Ella” in a recent New York Times interview), the L.A. transplant also just released his debut album, Blue Film. He appeared on Letterman this Tuesday, where he showed off his proficiency playing pizzicato on violin and seven-string guitar (he plays six instruments in total, including the mandolin). In addition to his multifaceted musical talent, he’s also known for unconventional covers — like “You’re the One I Want,” from Grease. If you can’t see him in person (his record-release show in Brooklyn tonight is expected to sell out), you can still look forward to his upcoming cameo on ABC’s Revenge.
