Mindy Kaling Is Not Holding That Torch You Think She’s Holding

Mindy Kaling visited The Howard Stern Show yesterday, where Stern asked if she had a one that got away. She does, of course. She’s a producer and writer of a consummate sitcom. She has a full cast of stock characters in her life. She can even give you a bit of a flashback into their relationship, if that interests you:

He’s a good friend of mine, yeah. He’s my best friend. He broke up with me. It was years and years ago that that breakup happened. I was so sad, not angry, sad. That was the hottest I ever looked ‘cause I stopped eating. When I get depressed, I stop eating. I was so miserable and so beautiful … He’s legitimately one of my best friends. I love him, and I think he’s a great person, but I’m not holding a candle for B.J.

Stern, a curious aunt, has follow-up questions about this Mr. B.J. Novak: Would Mindy have married him, and would she get back together with him? To the first, Kaling says she would have, but she was 24 and “for the record, if anyone asked me to marry them, I would have said yes.” To the second query, she says isn’t sure. That’s a plotline for another time. She knows how will-they-won’t-they couples work.
