The Balmain Show Was a Tribute to Free the Nipple

PARIS— Backstage at Balmain today, as Kimye paid their respects, designer Olivier Rousteing revealed that his collection had an unusual inspiration: Instagram’s censorship policy.

“It’s all about being banned and censored, and just being like, Express yourself; don’t repress yourself,” he told the Cut backstage, referring to his collection that featured strips of clothing over models’ breasts. Did he get the idea from l’affaire Rihanna? “You don’t need to look for the archives of the ‘90s or the ‘80s; it’s just all about what’s happening in the world today,” he said. “Sometimes it’s good to be inspired by what’s around you. And I’m inspired by those women that have, by my opinion, changed the world and the role of the women, and celebrate their body, their sexuality, and I’m proud of that, and I love that.” Click through the slideshow below to see the complete collection.
