Apparently, you can go home again. After some rocky years post-Dior firing, John Galliano has been hired as creative director of Maison Martin Margiela, reports The Business of Fashion. (Galliano was until recently the director of Russian beauty chain L’Etoile, a role he only took on in May.) Hiring such a recognizable, controversial figure is a surprising move for a company that is known for having its designers operate anonymously and even having its design team hide their faces in public appearances.

The news comes on the heels of Galliano’s appearance on French TV, in which he said that he plans to return to fashion “step by step.” Said Renzo Rosso, president of Only the Brave, which owns Margiela, “Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul. John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time. A unique, exceptional couturier for a Maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home.”
