smashbox's excellent adventure

Smashbox Is Road-tripping to Art Basel

If your plans for the week include rubbing shoulders with Miley Cyrus and Michelle Williams at Miami’s Art Basel, look out for a bright set of wheels rolling down Miami Beach. The car is a 1974 Cadillac covered in giant cherry-colored-lip prints, and it’s part of Smashbox’s #BingToBasel mobile art project. (“Bing” being the name of Smashbox’s vivid red lipstick, after the cherry.) Smashbox teamed up with Donald Robertson — roving creative director of Estée Lauder and consummate doodler — to launch the endeavor.

The Smashbox team and a vintage Cadillac stuffed with Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick in Bing traveled from Tucson to Miami over the course of a week. The car made a stop at the faux Prada store in Marfa, explored Austin, and then traveled to New Orleans and Gainesville before ending the road trip at Art Basel. Along the way, Smashbox gave away a limited edition of Smashbox’s Bing lipstick with a lip-print sleeve.

In a chat with the Cut, Robertson described how the bright-red interior of the Cadillac was the inspiration behind the Bing giveaway. Click the video below for a behind-the-scenes view on how Robertson transformed the vintage Cadillac with his iconic print.
