Speaking in the Senate yesterday before Democrats voted to block the latest Republican attempt to defund Planned Parenthood, Massachusetts senator and national hero Elizabeth Warren expertly broke down what makes the GOP’s latest attempt to block women’s access to health care so despicable. “Let’s be clear about something: The Republican scheme to defund Planned Parenthood is not some sort of surprised response to a highly edited video,” she said. “Nope. The Republican vote to defund Planned Parenthood is just one more piece of a deliberate, methodical, orchestrated, right-wing attack on women’s rights. And I’m sick and tired of it.”
Warren also reiterated that none of the federal funding received by Planned Parenthood goes toward abortions. Rather, the majority of the funds in question are Medicaid reimbursements for cancer screenings and other medical exams, as well as family-planning services that provide accessible birth control for low-income and uninsured individuals. “A vote today to defund Planned Parenthood is not a vote to defund abortions. It’s a vote to defund cancer screenings and birth control and basic health care for millions of Americans,” she said. Watch the video above to see the whole thing.
