At the panel honoring the Writers Guild Awardstelevision nominees on Wednesday, Kim Caramele introduced herself as Amy Schumer’s sister, but the school psychologist turned comedy writer is a force in her own right. Caramele was an associate producer on this summer’s Trainwreck and a writer for Inside Amy Schumer, and she’s spent the past few months working on a script for the upcoming Schumer–Jennifer Lawrence film.
Before she took the stage with the other nominated writers, the Cut asked Caramele to share her earliest memories of doing comedy with her sister. There was a skit in which her sibling pretended to be a fortune-teller who “interpreted” a light fixture to predict her future: “I was 4, and I asked for my husband to come home for Christmas,” says Caramele. “Amy looked at me like, ‘Where did that come from? Why?’” But Caramele also recalled a very unique viewing of the 2002 rom-tragedy A Walk to Remember.
“I was in high school, and I remember just being sad and crying while we both watched,” she said, “and Amy wanted to make fun of me crying so much so she began to overtly cry.” Alternating between scream-sobbing and “pretending like she couldn’t function,” she drove Caramele to “sob-laughing.”
“I shouldn’t have been laughing, but I couldn’t help it,” she said. “We have such a dark sense of humor, and I’ve always had anxiety about how funny she is. It was one of the hardest times I had laughed.”
