Cross high fashion, opera, and two familiar faces and you get the newest and chicest rendition of La Traviata since it’s premiere in 1853. Sofia Coppola, director of the Bling Ring and fashion somebody, and Valentino Garavani have directed and designed the opera for the Teatro Dell’Opera Di Roma in Rome.
Valentino designed the four dresses worn by the lead character, Violetta, Parisian courtesan and the play’s eponymous “fallen woman.” Francesca Dotto, who plays Violetta, struts the stage in an off-the-shoulder, tiered crimson dress, and a black gown that gives way to a fabulous teal train. The black-and-teal gown took Valentino 800 hours to make, according to the New York Times. Current creative directors of Maison Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli created the costumes for the rest of the ensemble.
