The Most Beautiful Hair Yet of Fashion Week

So far this week we’ve seen the edgy, cool, sexy, and strange Fashion Week beauty looks, but nothing you could describe as pretty — until today’s lace- and sequin-adorned hair at Rodarte. The brand’s ability to find “magic in the trash,” created some much-needed prettiness in Fashion Week beauty (something it does often). To create the look, hairstylist Odile Gilbert and designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy first spent a weekend making hair-barrette arts and crafts. Spare strips of red, white, and black tulle, and lace and sequins from the production of the collection were glued onto short tortoiseshell clips and a headband, which Gilbert placed in the back of the head and along the length of the hair.

“Childlike” and “organic,” is how Gilbert explained the guileless, sweet style. To create some soft texture to keep the look from appearing too juvenile, Gilbert and her team coated the models’ hair with Wella’s Enrich leave-in conditioner, and used a diffuser to go over twirled small sections of the hair. Hand combing the sections to break up the waves created a soft, piece-y look. The long streams of hair adorned with delicate bits and pieces of frippery made all the photographers and beauty editors sigh a little at the nostalgia and romance — even if we all knew better.
