How to Do a High-Fashion Messy Bun and Highlight

“Simple” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “runway beauty.” Whether it’s a full face of glitter or a colorful eyeliner, it’s generally more elevated than a basic, everyday look. However, Chanel is making a strong case for going back to basics — and it looks beautiful.

At their Paris Fashion Week winter 2018 show at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Chanel models walked through the woods/runway wearing a messy top knot and a super strong highlighter.

Hairstylist Sam McKnight wrote on Instagram that he wanted the hair to look like the models had done it themselves. He decorated the buns with translucent floral hair pins and (of course) pearls.

Tom Pecheux did the makeup, and seemed to follow the millennial style guide: strong brows, bright highlight around the eyes, and subtly pink lips. Art imitates Glossier.
