As if the details of his relationship weren’t already hideously sweet, we now know that Riz Ahmed — gorgeous, multitalented, Oscar-nominated Riz Ahmed — proposed to his wife using Scrabble tiles.
I’ll back up for a moment, because a Scrabble-tile proposal isn’t an isolated incident when it comes to this man and his antics. Back in January the actor revealed that he had quietly wed novelist Fatima Farheen Mirza — his gorgeous, multitalented best-selling author wife — in lockdown, after the two met in the sort of meet-cute event Nora Ephron would salivate over.
As Ahmed explained to Jimmy Fallon, the meeting took place in a coffee shop. It was there that he and his now-wife connected while “jostling over the same laptop plug points” — a power struggle that only leads to stress and sweat for most people. But apparently not Ahmed. And now comes this proposal via Scrabble tiles, something that should only really happen in rom-coms and Anna Karenina.
As he told Jimmy Kimmel on Monday: “We went out to the park, one of the few things we could do at that point in lockdown … We kind of had a little picnic and, you know, I popped the question.” Indeed, he did “that corny thing where I stole all the correct letters up and spelled out will you marry me?’”
To which Mirza apparently responded “you’re joking,” which, same!
