Chrissy Teigen Says Her Miscarriage Was an Abortion

While reflecting on her pregnancy loss from 2020, Chrissy Teigen spoke about the realization that what she once considered a miscarriage was actually an abortion. The model was expecting a boy with her husband John Legend when she was hospitalized for complications at 20 weeks pregnant and opened up about the difficult choices the two of them had to make. “It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive — and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention,” Teigen said during Propper Daley’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation summit held in Beverly Hills on Thursday, per The Hollywood Reporter. “Let’s just call it what it was: an abortion. An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance.”

Teigen, 36, and her husband, 43, share two children: 6-year-old daughter Luna and 4-year-old son Miles, who were both conceived through IVF. During Thursday’s summit, Teigen discussed the outpouring of support she received after going public with her loss and how the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June helped her understand what it really was. “I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago,” said Teigen. Recalling a conversation she and Legend had following the ruling, in which she expressed sympathy for people who have had abortions and the difficult choices they had to make, Teigen was taken aback when Legend suggested she was one of those people.

“I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way,” said Teigen. “I told the world we had a miscarriage. The world agreed we had a miscarriage. All the headlines said it was a miscarriage … I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion,” she explained. Last month, Teigen announced that she and Legend are expecting another baby after undergoing more IVF treatments and that, despite her nerves, “so far everything is perfect and beautiful.”
