big little drinks

Are Negroni Sbagliatos Actually Good?

I’ve never tasted a negroni sbagliato, but I’ve spent a lot of time this year thinking about them thanks to TikTok’s obsession with House of the Dragons actor Emma D’Arcy’s favorite drink (with prosecco in it). As sultry as it sounds, the urge to order one of these things at a bar has never struck me, and I’m starting to think this is for the best. A new and brave video from Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon has confirmed what everyone is apparently too afraid to say: Negroni sbagliatos with prosecco are not good.

At least, they’re not for everyone. In the video, which appears to take place at some sort of catered function (by all appearances, parents’ night at the Big Little Lies school), Witherspoon informs Dern with the panache of a natural wine-bar sommelier that she has ordered a negroni. Sbagliato. With prosecco in it. “Wanna taste it?” she says, offering Dern a sip.

After a second of attempting to reconcile the drink’s taste with its distinctly sexy name, Dern’s eyebrows distort into abject horror. No one has looked this revolted since Renata Klein thought about not being rich. “That’s disgusting,” she announces, setting the drink down as if even holding it is causing her irreparable harm. Witherspoon confesses that, actually, “it is kind of gross” before both of them dissolve into giggles. Bold declarations indeed.
