Marchesa: Do Not Touch the Models

We’ve always found fashion presentations rather bizarre. There’s something lovely and Victorian about passing through an art gallery filled with models on pedestals, but there’s the etiquette issue. How close can you stand to a live model without invading her personal space? Can you talk to her? Can she talk back? “I feel badly for them because everyone’s just coming in and staring,” Phillip Bloch, back from L.A. with a suspiciously full head of hair, told us at Marchesa’s presentation yesterday. “So you say ‘hi’ and move along. I’m not trying to engage in conversation. I’m not trying to date them. It’s sort of like, ‘Thank you for showing me the dress.’” Chanel Iman, for her part, said she’d take runway over presentation “any day,” but that ultimately, “all of us models are trained to do this. We have to stand in different poses for really long time.” Indeed! —Jada Yuan
