Proenza Schouler Avoid Center Stage and Beauty Queens

Proenza Schouler designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough don’t always love the way their gowns are shot in editorial spreads. But it’s not scantily clad ladies that worry them — it’s the beauty queens. “It’s when it gets in the hands of the wrong stylist or the wrong magazine and all of a sudden it’s Miss Teen USA wearing it,” Hernandez said. Luckily, such a ghastly situation has never befallen Proenza, but other designers aren’t so fortunate. How does one remedy those kinds of situations? “You just let it go. What can you do?” Hernandez continued. “You can’t retract it. We can have a lot of control over what we lend out, but when things are bought, we can’t do anything about it.” Also, don’t expect to see them guest-judge Project Runway. “I don’t think we would,” McCollough said. “I’ve only seen the show a couple of times. We like to stay in and take care of business at work. Not put ourselves out there too much.” In the meantime, the design duo are hard at work on their new shoe line, womenswear, and glasses line. —Jada Yuan
