Why Is Kate Moss Getting Downgraded?

Something interesting has started happening to Kate Moss, and it has nothing to do with sharing bathrooms with her closest friends. She’s getting kind of, well, downgraded, and we can’t decide if it’s good that she’s still working or just flat-out embarrassing. First Agent Provocateur demoted her from starring in the campaign for its main line to doing its bridal line. And today we learned she’s been demoted to the Just Cavalli campaign after mugging for the Roberto Cavalli campaign for the past few seasons. Though it doesn’t have a lower-priced line for her to move to, she’s also out at Yves Saint Laurent, which replaced her with Naomi Campbell.

Designers must shake up the look of things every season, and casting changes are a necessary part of that. So perhaps Agent Provocateur and Cavalli love Moss so much they don’t want to let her go so they throw her in the slots they’ve got left. That would be rather flattering. But what if, on the other hand, they’re seeing her in a different light — less ultra high fashion and more mass market (ahem, Topshop)? Donna Karan has hired Moss again for her fall campaign since she loved her so much in the spring ads. But how long will she last before she scoots down to DKNY?
