‘Vogue’ Wants a Michelle Obama Cover

Vogue is eager to include Michelle Obama in an upcoming issue. In other news, we’re wearing our Captain Obvious hat today! A Vogue spokesperson told WWD, “Starting with Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s been a long-standing tradition to photograph the new first lady. So needless to say, we are very interested in working with Mrs. Obama. Precisely how is still being discussed.” Michelle has already appeared in Vogue but never on the cover. She was featured in the September 2007 issue and included as an “It” girl in the April issue. Hillary Rodham Clinton was the only First Lady to appear on the cover of the magazine, in 1998. Vogue editors Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley ardently campaigned for Barack Obama since September and raised a considerable amount of money for his camp with events like the special dinner honoring Michelle Obama at Calvin Klein’s house in June and Runway to Change held during Fashion Week. So it would seem Wintour would want to put Michelle on the cover. But would Michelle agree?

The First Lady–elect has appeared on numerous magazine covers, but none of them for high-fashion books. She appeared on the cover of Ebony and Ladies’ Home Journal in August and the cover of More’s October issue. For More she insisted on wearing her own clothes (she chose a pink Mario Pinto dress). Her style has been an important part of what she represents as a political figure; we’ve seen her in H&M and J.Crew and the occasional high-end designer piece by Thakoon or Narciso Rodriguez. But she purchases her own clothes, which, though nice, are a far cry from the Oscar de la Renta we’ve seen on Cindy McCain, Laura Bush, and even Hillary Clinton. And let’s not forget the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, in which Tyra Banks portrayed her because, according to rumor, Michelle didn’t want to appear in such expensive, high-end threads. Now that the campaign’s over, will she gussy up in Oscar for Anna? Or would Anna agree to put her in on the cover in an outfit that’s more, well, her?
