After her first solo album came out in June 2003, Beyonce stepped out at the Video Music Awards looking in-your-face shiny. With all the hair, makeup, and jewelry happening on top of that blinding dress, you'd think she forgot Destiny's Child wasn't standing on either side of her and didn't need to try hard to stand out.

Here, Beyonce performs onstage at the Radio Music Awards in October 2003, again with the beauty-queen makeup. It makes us uncomfortable that she had to wear that while her backup dancers wore letter jackets.

November 2003: Beyonce arrives at the Europe Music Awards in Edinburgh wearing some sort of car-seat-meets-squirrel costume. Perplexing.

The Grammys. February 2004. Not bad, but what's with the scrap of chain mail on her chest? Did a shark eat the rest of it on her way over?

Destiny's Child attended Fashion Rocks as a team in 2005. Again, Beyonce steals the spotlight, like a lone sunflower in a field after a forest fire.

How cute -- she wore pink to the Pink Panther premiere in 2006. The relatively understated look (for her) shows she's moving away from her Destiny days and realizes she doesn't need sparkles or a busy pattern to hold her own.

The 2006 Grammys. The dress might look like a curtain, but at least it looks like one of those $10,000 curtains. And again, not overly shiny or busy. Well played.

Surely, we all remember this moment at the Video Music Awards in 2006. Beyonce ditches the shiny Vegas-showgirl approach for the rip-off-the-clothes-to-reveal-a-skimpy-outfit approach (as perfected by Britney Spears at the 2000 VMAs, might we add). If only she wasn't so patented.

On the red carpet for the 2006 VMAs, Beyonce wore a modest amount of sparkles in a somewhat pleasing Art Deco pattern.

Beyonce returned to major sparkles during her Dreamgirls era. Here's one example, from the 2007 Golden Globes. The dress looks like it's made out of those flat gold necklaces commonly found in jewelry-repair shops in malls.

Again in the Dreamgirls phase in January 2007, Beyonce shines herself up for the U.K. premiere. Her figure looks stunning.

Beyonce toned it down for the 2007 Grammys. That dress does nothing for her figure, but what's worse is how her hair looks wet on top. Tease, please!

Just when you thought the glitter phase had ended, Beyonce hit the stage in this number in July 2007. Remember: If satellites can't bounce signals off it, it's not shiny enough.

The dress Beyonce wore to the Grammys in February 2008 reminds us of Poseidon. Then again, that bracelet makes us think "Zeus." Hmm...

Several months later, Beyonce entered her avant-garde phase at the MTV Europe Music Awards in November wearing Gareth Pugh. We wouldn't have minded if she stuck with the sparkly showgirl stuff.

Heavens! She emerged in Alexander McQueen for the World Music Awards in November. This is probably her most toned-down stage look to date. But it falls flat. Why? Still, we applaud her natural makeup.

Sorry, but the dress Beyonce wore to the Cadillac Records premiere this month looks like it's made from garbage bags and doilies. But again, we're glad the makeup isn't trying to compete with the shiniest dress man ever made.
