Yigal Azrouël Makes Fashion Editors Swoon

If there’s one New York designer female fashion editors would make sweet, sweet love to, it’s Yigal Azrouël. When he took his bow at the end of his show in the tents this morning, editors squealed and chirped, “He’s so cute!” His fall 2009 collection was a hit with showgoers, and hardly included a piece we wouldn’t wear. Standout looks included a one-sleeved, eighties-inspired, bright-purple dress; roomy cocoon coats; and a few dresses with structured futuristic shoulders (think Dr. Spock but in a good way). Leather accents abounded, coming in trims on sleeves and necklines or waist belts. Yigal described the collection as “dark and romantic,” and very chic. “It’s luxury goods for cool people,” he told us backstage after the show. He’s not holding his vision back in the downturn either. “I tried to push the boundary this season. The shopper now, she wants to buy something special.”

This was Yigal’s first show in the tents (he usually shows in Chelsea). He said being in the tents was much easier, because operations were more organized. He also noted that more editors would attend his show at the tents since traveling across town is a hindrance. Would he be back next season? “I don’t know. I hope so.”
