The stars of the documentary about Valentino, Valentino: The Last Emperor, are the designer and his longtime partner Giancarlo Giammetti. But one may argue they’re not what truly make the film sparkle. That honor belongs to Milton, Monty, Maude, Margot, Maggie, and Molly — Valentino’s pugs! The film, hitting select theaters today, documents Vava as he prepares to retire from fashion. His pugs follow him everywhere, from the studio to the private jet to the yacht. “He’s always had pugs,” Valentino’s friend Lynn Wyatt told us at the film’s premiere last night. “I mean, they die, and he gets more pugs, and he’s just always had pugs, and when they snore, he loves it, and when they snort, he loves it,” she said, laughing. Indeed, director Matt Tyrnauer recalled how the pugs frolic amongst the couture. “There’s a scene in the movie where they’re making a $100,000 dress, and the pug walks out from underneath the dress. They got in the way in a good way.”
Model Coco Rocha explained how the pugs assisted their master in his business. “When we’re walking for our fittings, they walk alongside us. They’re showing us how it’s done,” she said. But they’re not always so pleasant off duty. Gwyneth Paltrow says her young children are obsessed with the dogs, adding, “They’re kind of mean; they’re not really good kids’ dogs. But my daughter is undeterred, she keeps trying.”
Fellow dog lover Martha Stewart has met Valentino’s pugs but says they haven’t been introduced to her dogs. “They’re going to be friends, we decided today,” Stewart told us. “My dogs have a new blog — do you know their blog, The Daily Wag?” The blog just launched today, and Martha’s dogs plan to have Valentino’s pugs guest-blog at some point. And here we thought we’d never see six dogs blog at once.
