Design Hunting: New Modernism, Murphy Beds, and Dripless Candles

Vincent & Edgar

I've been fascinated by this storefront for as long as I can remember! Each time I pass by, it's closed. The other day on my way back from a shoot, the door was finally open and I went in to stroll around. Vincent & Edgar makes custom shoes.

Please Do Not Touch Samples

The interior is a throwback to a time when women wore gloves and men wore hats. There are shoe trees and sumptuous leathers to choose from, if you can fork over $2,500. For one pair. I know, I know, but imagine if you had one pair of perfect shoes that bathed your feet in gorgeous, sensuous leather! This is my fantasy. Maybe one day.

Giant Plaster Foot

I loved the Roman-esque giant foot that was sitting on a desk next to a pile of lightbulbs. Vincent & Edgar, 972 Lexington Avenue, Suite 2, near 71st Street.

Gracious Home's Dripless Candles

Photo: Wendy Goodman
I wanted to scoop up an armful of these beautiful candles that don't drip on your table. They come in a variety of colors and lengths. It is a pleasure to shop here. Gracious Home, 766 Sixth Avenue, at 25th Street.

Marcel Breuer in Connecticut

Photo: Wendy Goodman
My friends Barbara Dente and Donna Cristina are design and fashion consultants. They bought this beautiful but falling-down 1966 Marcel Breuer house in 2007 and have been painstakingly loving it back to life. That mural on the bottom is attributed to Breuer's friend Alexander Calder.

More Views of the Breuer House

Photo: Wendy Goodman
Here's a view of the front, with the fieldstone wall, and the airy living room with the cozy fireplace. The sectional sofa is by Piero Lissoni. There's one piece of art on the wall: a huge Steven Klein photo of one of his horses.

A View From the Outside; the Dining Table

Photo: Wendy Goodman
On the left is an exterior wall; that's a window looking into the guest room. On the right is the kitchen table, also by Piero Lissoni. I look at this kind of pared-down living with a wistful eye, as my pack-rat ways would never do here.

And the Desk Never Moves!

Photo: Wendy Goodman
Great discoveries at Resource Furniture on Third Avenue! This Murphy bed system is ingenious. When it's up, you can work on the desk; it's easy to lower, and the desk never moves (so you don't have to clear it off when you go to bed). A great solution for a small New York apartment.

Fringed Adjustable-Height Lamp

Photo: Wendy Goodman
I liked this funny fringed swing lamp. It's on a pulley so you can adjust the height.

Mod Leather Chair

This leather chair on its single pod leg is so mod, I felt like I was in a David Hockney painting. Resource Furniture, 969 Third Avenue at 58th Street.
