Bravo has a slew of fashion reality-TV programming coming out in the wake of losing Project Runway to Lifetime. It’s not unlike when the first celebrity decided to design clothes: First came the rain, and, five seconds later, the downpour. After all, Bravo needed some cushioning in case The Fashion Show didn’t work out. Season one of that series just ended, making way for the next attempt at filling Runway’s shoes: Launch My Line, which premieres September 16, right in the middle of Fashion Week. In Launch My Line, “ten accomplished professionals” possessing “a passion for fashion” are paired with actual designers. The duos create one look per episode to parade in front of a studio audience. The designer on the winning team gets $50,000. The winning non-designer walks away with free Bravo publicity and a side of any emotional scarring derived thereof.
Contestants include New York City’s self-proclaimed resident “dandy” Patrick McDonald (he’s sat on hundreds of front rows!), architect David Applebaum (he name-drops Rupert Murdoch!), and D.J. Eric Cubeechee (he’s D.J.-ed parties for Wilmer Valderrama and Paris Hilton!). Designers include people who have worked at major labels like BCBG Max Azria, Gen Art alumni, and those who design lines like EMIL Couture and Single. Judges include Dsquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten (who also host the show), Scoop’s Stefani Greenfield, and Lisa Kline. The adorable Dean and Dan are reason enough to tune in, along with how when the contestants first see the design duo, they appear to have no idea who they are.
