Katie Holmes Really Is Designing Clothes

Katie Holmes has been ginning up outfits with her stylist Jeanne Yang for a little while now. The jumpsuit she wore at left late last year was perhaps the most memorable, if not necessarily in a good way. And now they’ll mass-produce their creations under the new Holmes & Yang label. The line will launch exclusively at Maxfield in L.A. this fall. Offerings include womenswear, inspired by Katie’s style, and childrenswear, inspired by the style of the globe’s most famous tot fashionista, (fashionistot?) Suri Cruise.

The last thing the clothing market needs is another celebrity-designed label, but one must credit Holmes for giving her stylist half the credit. (Or perhaps more accurately, almost half the credit, since her name comes second.) This way Yang can piggyback off Katie’s fame while still making a name for herself, rather than cower in a sweaty top secret basement somewhere as Holmes’s anonymous design slave, lorded over by Suri from atop her highest high chair. A similar business model worked well for Justin Timberlake, who doesn’t claim to actually design William Rast himself. If his clothing line made it out of L.A., maybe Holmes & Yang can, too.
