The ICP Rounds Out Its Year of Fashion With ‘Dress Codes’

“Dress Codes” closes out the International Center of Photography’s Year of Fashion with a group of artists more concerned with beauty, identity, and role play than with fashion per se. Mickalene Thomas’s giant, hyper-realistic photos show African-American women in rooms decked out in animal-print textiles and wood paneling; Nathalie Djurberg handcrafts gnarled figures that crawl, prance, and self-destruct around horrific and beautiful domestic and forest settings; and Kalup Linzy sings in Judy Garland style and affects middle-age soap-opera personalities. This selection of photos and videos from the triennial’s 34 artists includes Korean Kimsooja’s clip of men in Mumbai wringing out Indian cotton and two wild Polaroids by Jeremy Kost.
